In-cockpit TBM training, in your airplane, one pilot at a time

Initial and recurrent training in every TBM model, 700 through 980, delivered through Goldberg Aviation's insurance-approved program. Based at Addison (KADS), but I will also travel to you. And I fly with you until you're proficient, not until the clock runs out.

What I instruct

TBM initial and recurrent training, any model

One-on-one, full-immersion training in your aircraft: ground sessions plus real cross-country flight scenarios, flown to FAA practical test standards in VFR and IFR conditions. Your insurance carrier will recognize it, because it runs through Goldberg Aviation's approved program.

Initial training

Typically 3–7 days

If you're new to the TBM, this is where we start. Systems, avionics, normal and emergency procedures, high-altitude operations, and the decision-making that keeps you safe in a single-engine turboprop. I fly with you until you're proficient, not until the clock runs out.

Recurrent training

Typically 1–2 days

Your annual recurrent, tailored to how and where you actually fly your TBM. It satisfies your insurance recurrent requirement, and I can roll your flight review and instrument proficiency check into it.

Turbine transition

Piston to turboprop

Stepping up from a piston single or twin into your first TBM? I'll build turbine engine management, pressurization, flight-level operations, and the speed and planning mindset that comes with them into your initial.

TAAP Certified

TBMOPA Advanced Aviator Program

Working toward TBMOPA Advanced Aviator status? I'm a TAAP-approved instructor, so your annual recurrent with me qualifies, and we complete your TAAP checklist together: stabilized approaches, airspeed and configuration discipline, icing and FIL review, ADM and the operational guidelines.

How the training runs

Scenario-based, not checkbox-based

Every session is built around the flying you actually do. Ground work covers systems, avionics, performance, weather and the TBM's known trouble spots; the flying is real cross-country legs with the decisions, approaches and abnormals worked in where they'd actually happen. I write a lot of Goldberg's scenario-based and aeronautical decision-making material, and that's what we train from.

The process follows Goldberg Aviation's FAA/Industry Training Standards model, and you finish by demonstrating knowledge and flight proficiency to FAA practical test standards, VFR and IFR.

David Boyd
About Me

Part pilot, part coach, part systems nerd.

I've been flying since 1989 and instructing in the TBM since 2021, with most of my TBM time spent in the right seat helping pilots like you get comfortable and competent in your own airplane. I'm based in the Dallas area out of Addison Airport, and I'll train you anywhere in the country, either at your home field or at mine.

I'm one of the TBM instructors at Goldberg Aviation, which has trained more TBM pilots in their own aircraft than anyone, on six continents since 2014. Your training with me is scheduled, billed and insured through Goldberg.
